Herbert Howells: A Hymn for St Cecilia (Choir and Organ Tutorial)
Просмотров 1 тыс.8 месяцев назад
St Cecilia is the patron saint of music, and what better way to celebrate it than with Herbert Howells’ beautiful anthem, “A Hymn for St Cecilia”? Cecilia’s traditional feast day is 22nd November. We recorded this piece in the time we had remaining at the end of the session in January, during which we had already recorded all the tutorials for this year’s series, so everyone was rather tired. U...
Gabriel Fauré: In Paradisum (Requiem Mass) (Choir and Organ Tutorial)
Просмотров 8749 месяцев назад
Written around 1888, Faure’s Requiem is among the most well loved and widely sung of the requiem masses. It’s relatively straightforward to sing compared with, say, Duruflé’s alternative. In this episode of our Choir and Organ Tutorials from the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich we’re presenting a rehearsal and performance of the last movement, In Paradisum, led by Ralph Allwood. It’s partic...
The heavens are telling - Josef Haydn (Choir and Organ Tutorial)
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.10 месяцев назад
In his introduction to this tutorial on Haydn’s famous chorus “The heavens are telling” from his oratorio “The Creation”, Ralph Allwood explains the piece’s origins. Haydn visited London and was very impressed with the tradition of choirs singing oratorios, in particular Handel’s works. He decided that he’d like to write such a work too. Someone took him to see the Herschel telescope, which he ...
Sanctus from Messe Solennelle - Louis Vierne (Choir and Organ Tutorial)

Louis Vierne's Messe Solennelle, from which the ORNC choir performs the Sanctus in this tutorial episode, is typical of the late French Romantic genre, and has some similar characteristics to Widor’s big mass (Vierne was Widor’s assistant at the Paris Conservatoire). It involves both of the organs typically installed in big Parisian churches, namely the Grand Orgue (the big one usually mounted ...

How beautiful upon the mountains - Sir John Stainer (Choir and Organ Tutorial)
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.Год назад
Ralph Allwood explains in his introduction to this tutorial that his grandmother used to sing Stainer’s Crucifixion every night of Holy Week, so popular was it at the time. Stainer’s well-judged Victorian harmonies and talent for tugging at the heart strings give rise to a surprising musical beauty and crowd-pleasing effect. Stainer lived from 1840-1901 and was knighted in 1888 by Queen Victori...

Choral harmony in Mendelssohn’s “There shall a star”. Mendelssohn had a genius for choral harmony, beautifully exemplified in this setting of “There shall a star”, part of an oratorio named Christus (Op. 97), about the life of Christ, which the composer didn’t manage to complete before he died. It includes a setting of the well-known Nicolai chorale, Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (“As brig...

As part of this episode’s rehearsal of Psalm 133, Ralph Allwood talks about the blessings of unity-how precious it is, and how we must hold on to it. This very short psalm is sung to a chant by Sir Edward Elgar, here presented in the key of A flat (sometimes it is offered in G flat). It’s a simple single chant, with relatively little movement in each part, requiring poised singing and good cont...

    [quote:] "Yeah... and all of these have got ywo woofers now... so the bass is in stereo" - "Yes, which again makes a huge difference". [unquote] Really? Are you serious? Bass is non-directional, let alone stereo!

      @@archdukeofsynth You can have double bass, so more bass, even connect four subwoofers if you want. But you can not experience stereo bass. Frequencies under 60 Hz are practically non directional to the ear and can not be pinpointed to a location or direction. So you can not distinguish between left and right. And yes, I have two massive subwoofers connected. On the lower octave of a 16' stop I can not distinguish whether it comes from the left subwoofer or the right subwoofer. 😉

    • @ViscountOrgans
      @ViscountOrgans 3 месяца назад

      Hello John, Thanks for pointing out the possible confusion in the commentary. Stereo is used in the context of advising that our instruments now have two bass channels. In the past just one. So there is far now less possibility of frequency interference in the bass registers as they speak through two independent channels with notes directed two different speakers in a number of different ways including a 'poly' option that ensures that notes that might interfere with each other in a single speaker are avoided.

    • @John_van_Kleef
      @John_van_Kleef 3 месяца назад

      @@ViscountOrgans Thanks for clearing that up for me. I interpreted the statement as having a true dedicated left and right channel for lower frequencies. But it does indeed seem to make sense that you get a much better 'spread' of the lower frequencies by adding a second bass driver. Best wishes, John

    I was very privileged to sing this anthem with Dr Allwood in 2009. Eton College Chapel Choir was touring South Africa, and sang Evensong at our parish church (Christ Church, Arcadia) with the Elgar as the principal anthem at Evensong, with David Goode at the organ. I was Assistant DoM, and invited to precent for the Rose Responses. I conducted the Elgar a few months later with my chamber choir, and I'm pretty sure I copied Dr Allwood's fine interpretation, even unwittingly! Anyway, wonderful memories.
